Hi all again,
Would it be possible for someone to explain in layman's terms some of the terminology used in the bios please, as some of the selections are purely hit/miss. The list is as follows;
Configure sata as (have this set to ide)
Intel Robson Technology
Bios EHCI handoff
Port 64/60 Emulation
C1E Support
Vanderpool Technology
CPU TM Function
Execute disable bit
PECI
Memory remap feature
PEG Port control
Peg force x 1
Me device
Asus CGI Function
I know what a lot of the jargon means (or think I do) but every new mobo brings new lingo. I have been trying to suss out a few gremlins but without much success.
The CPU temp and Vcore are being reported incorrectly;
In XP 32 bit bios Cpu temp is 10 - 13c (in Everest it reads 6 - 10c)
In XP 32 bit bios CPU Vcore is 1.16 (in Everest it reads 1.16)
In XP 32 bit AI Suite will not function
In XP 64 bit temps and Vcore read likewise
In XP 64 bit AI Suite works ok.
Bluetooth won't work at all
Device Manager throws up a prob with a keyboard which aint even installed
On Asus Tech advice I upped the bios to 0503 (no change)
The CPU probs I have read are common to the CPU and not the mobo, ok.
The inability to load a few apps seems to point to the mobo, or the o/s.
While these are a small price to pay for the blindingly fast P5K and E6850, I just like to see things working, so what do you think, I can hear Paulzig and Merc's brains clicking into gear. Any ideas will be appreciated, Dee.

well the varied CPU readings could be because everest and the bios read different or come about their reading differently. Secondly when you load up the bios you aren't running your OS so that would account for a load difference between the two states your are getting your reading from. Like putting a thermometer in the oven and comparing it when the oven is set to 100 or 200 degrees of course it's going to read differently because it's not at the same setting, no it's not exactly the same and that's kinda of a dumbed down analogy but you get the point. As for the rest of those settings you'll have to wait for someone else to help you with that since i'm running a AMD.

Intel Robson Technology - A new tech from Intel that uses flash memory to increase system performance, turn OFF if you're not using it
Bios EHCI handoff- Enhanced Host Controller Interface Specification for USB leave on
Port 64/60 Emulation- Don't know what this does lol, I turned it off lol
C1E Support- OFF slows your CPU down when not under load by lowering its multiplier
Vanderpool Technology- VIrtualization
CPU TM Function- Throttles clocks speed to keep the CPU cooler... OFF
Execute disable bit- BIOS level antivirus of sorts
PECI- Supposed to make your CPU run cooler if it supports the feature, didnt work for me
Memory remap feature- Don't know but I think it has to been turned on for over 2 gigs
PEG Port control- choses between PCI-e and other VGA options
Peg force x 1- must be some fancy OC feature, probably just bumps up PCI-e frequency
Me device- Dunno WTF this is
Asus CGI Function- Must be what it says, CGI, graphics I guess.

I put up with the temp read issues, the BIOSes are basically all the same 0311 onwards.

Thank you grim 22x7 and Paulzig.
Paulzig, I'm a bit green, what does WTF mean ph34r.gif , seems to get mentioned a lot on this site, Water Temp Function, Windows Test Feature, Windows Terminal Failure(hmmm), Windows Technical Forum...........

On a serious note, you would have thought that the bios thingies would be better explained, like I think up an abbreviation and everybody tries to figure out what it means.............which brings us back to WTF

Thank you for the input, I'll try a few of those settings but can't see it making much difference. BTW, what graphics drivers are you running at the min, might be worth a change there. Dee ph34r.gif

Make sure you are using the la-*test*-('") Everest Ultimate that covers the P35 chipset. Available here http://www.lavalys.com/beta/everestultimat...fvegd2jon0x.zip

You can save your settings by copying and pasting the everest.ini configuration file out of you current EU folder.

Yeah some of those acronyms are pretty stupid. Its What The Fxxk by the way biggrin.gif We try to maintain a PG13 rating on this board, and sometimes I find it difficult to maintain a civil tongue, If you met me in real life you'd hear for yourself how foul mouth I can get, especially after a few cocktails..The rule of thumb is: Whatever you don't need, turn OFF some of it really is unnecessary garbage and one can do without it.
Most boards have the same features, they just name them something else.
Do you have a PS2 keyboard or a USB one?
I'm using 163.44 at the moment, but i notice in your sig that you have a 6600GT and I have no idea how those fare with the new drivers..

Hi Merc, Hi Paulzig,
Yep, I have the la-*test*-('") Everest but it still reads the same. You must admit that going into the bios can be pretty daunting.
As for WTF, we use it very regularly over here only we use it to start a sentence. biggrin.gif Without seeming to be prejudiced, we call it speaking German here. Have you ever heard of Dennis Leary, he does a wonderful version of "Usage of the word Fcuk". Really funny. Let me know if you haven't, can send you a copy.
I have a Logitech keyboard and mouse (wireless), birthday pressy from my son two summers ago, and they use a wee usb receiver unit.
I visited the Nvidia site last night and d/led the la-*test*-('") drivers which are 163.7100 and installed them. Haven't got round to checking for any changes yet, maybe today. The 6600gt is part of a pair which will end up in son's pc whenever I acquire a 8600gt, I couldn't justify a 8800 as I don't game. The 6600gt gets a score of 4.7 in Vista which is the lowest, I think a 8600 will bring it well over the 5. Happy days. Dee ph34r.gif

Yeah, the temp sensor is borked on some of these e6850's, won't read right no matter what I do. I don't use a USB keyboard so I can't really say whether my p5k has this particular problem or not.
BIOS can be daunting if you haven't been in there before, and it has that mystique about it, people assume that changing stuff in BIOS can cause irreparable damage if not done by a professional, in reality its a bit more forgiving these days, excepting voltages and such. I cant recall that dennis leary thing, but I like the guy.

The P5K deluxe has bluetooth? why is the vcore only 1.16v...

the dart- 10-09-2007
The Vcore is obviously reading wrong. In probe 2 the cpu temp and vcore will alternate from 5-6c to 12-13c and 1.16 to 1.30 respectively. When you say you just add 15c to the temp reading, which reading would I add to. I reckon my temps are about 20c out from the higher reading, meaning the cpu temp would be approx 32c. Not that I will be doing anything that intensive, it's nice to know what the temps are exactly.
I was using a Bluetooth dongle for transferring ringtones and the like to the family's mobile phones etc. but can't get it to work on this mobo on XP Pro 32 bit. it works ok on XP Pro 64 bit........
If you want I'll pm Dennis Leary for you, if the site allows it. It's really funny.

dennis leary is funny but check out david peel & the lower east side 60's-70's band he does a song "F is not a dirty word" that's funny as hell. it's where dennis leary got most of his stuff.
