I have 4 W.D drives and for some reason since install one of the SATAII 250 Gb drives has been reporting temperatures 15C over the other SATAII drive.

As I bought it from new I have always considered RMA'g it but I've run -*test*-('")s and they have come back fine. Anyway its always niggled.

I'm currently researching a NAS device to stream HD content. Looking at the Infrant ReadyNAS I noticed a list of incompatable HD's:-
http://www.infrant.com/wiki/index.php/Hard...patibility_List

INCOMPATIBLE

* Maxtor disks - various SATA II models of Maxtor disks have been shown to hang on SMART commands causing intermittent failures. If you are using Maxtor SATA II disks, we advise that you update the disk firmware to the la-*test*-('"). In the meantime, we cannot recommend Maxtor disks at this time.

* Western Digital JS/KS/YD/YS - These models of Western Digital disks may return inaccurate temperature causing intermittent warnings and possible forced shutdowns, and we cannot recommend these disks at this time.

* Western Digital YS - The YS series is known to drop out from RAID sets intermittently. Western Digital has posted a firmware update that fixes this, although it has not yet been verified by Infrant. Please see Western Digital YS Warning.

My drive is a WD2500KS so why it has always reported the temperature is now known.

Shame that 2 out of 3 of the incompatable list are W.D drives sad.gif

Just thought i'd share in case anyone else has this or develops it and their drive reports as fine.

Thanks for the information!!! I own drives in that list, but have never had a problem with any of them. I'll know what to look for, in the event I ever do.

I've got a 500 KS and 500 YS. Both are reporting 53-56C. Yikes! My other drives are more like 42C.

Odd thing is that I'm having problems with the KS dropping out of the RAID (subject of another thread). The YS has been solid since Day One. Good thing, because I can't get the firmware to update.
