I need help in choosing a video card to upgrade from my Radeon X850 pro.
I was told to get the EVGA E Geoforce 7950 GTKO 512 MB DDR3 PCI-E, but i am leaning more towards the 8800 series. Will i notice a difference other then my pockets?

HeXDeMoN- 04-23-2007
Going off my memory i believe 7950 is a dx9 card and 8800 are dx10. If you want future proof i'd go with 8800 series just for directx 10 *i wouldnt get a 8800gs though*

WannaGoFast- 04-23-2007
I never had a 7950....but I do know that my single 8800GTS scores almost as well in 3dmark as 2 7900's.

It's definately a good idea to go with a newer card. You can get a dx10 card in the near-to $200 range. They aren't as good as the top end ATI 1950XTX but it's capable of running vista in all of it's showie glory. These cards are running 256mg and a clock of around 2000mhz for a good one. careful some of the 8600 series are running as low as 1000mhz so pay attention to what you are buying. The new architecture is definately worth the money as is DX10.

Ok, so if i choose the 8800 GTS vs the GTX will that be good? In a sense i am an online gamer and i aml ooking for fast, crisp, smooth gaming. The diffrence in price between the two is quite high.I see Wannagofast has the GTS, why didnt you go with the GTX?

It was purely a money issue wink.gif ....I got mine new retail when they first came out.
At that time all I was able to afford was the GTS. I dont regret it one bit. It rocks.
If I feel in the future I need more then I will add another GTS when they are cheaper.

Money issue here as well. I won't spend more that the mid 300s on a vid card and I hold onto them awhile. I lucked out and got this card barely used for $360 and it is outstanding. The GTS is a very nice card and like wanna said, if it drags in the future stick another one in there.

I have the 8800GTX, the 7950 GT KO, and a pair of 7900GTs as well.

If you're into sheer performance, then the 8800 series is the way to go. It absolutely blows everything else out of the water right now, either in the GTS or GTX. That said, I get no complaints from my son running the 7950. At 1680 x 1050, it is flawless running Guild Wars, BF2, Battle for Middle Earth, and a couple of others I probably don't want to know about.

If your expected life for the card is less than a year, you might be very happy with a 7950. If you want it to last two or more years, go with the 8800 series.

Thanks to all, i have made up my mind and after looking at all the answers in the replies, i will go with the 8800GTX.I just have to expalin to the head boss( my wife) on why i did it lol.
I do intend to keep it for a couple of years,i do like fast smooth gaming , and aftre looking at comparison charts, i am sold on this.
This is what i intend to do :
Upgrade mother board to A32N SLI deluxe, get kingston 2 gig ddr2 ram, 8800 gtx, 2 barracuda 320 gig set up as raid 0.P&C powercooling 750wat copper(dealer cant find one is OCZ ok?)

Anyways above to complement my 8800 GTX so that there is no bottle neck. Please advice if that is ok or needs improvement.
Thanks...smile.gif

The GTX is an awesom card monsoon. The A8N32 SLI Deluxe uses regular DDR not DDR2. OCZ makes some nice units. What CPU do you have?

Monsoon- 04-24-2007
What CPU do you have?

Well,
I am planning to go with this :Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Socket AM2 Dual Core 2.6Ghz 2000FSB 1MBx2 Box

Wooo so i can use my old memory then.

That is a very nice cpu, however it requiers DDR2 memory. So if your old memory is DDR, you will have to pick up some new memory.

grim22x7- 04-24-2007
So then there is a little bottleneck...the MOBO wont support the memory the CPU wants and the CPU wont support the memory the MOBO wants...

Looks like you'll have to go with a different CPU that supports DDR. However, since you're upgrading I would think about looking at MOBO's that support the newer DDR2 ram that way you can continue to upgrade later. If I'm not mistaken the DDR2 ram is coming down in price while the DDR is going up because of the lower quantities of DDR and the mass production of DDR2. So it'll be better to go that way in the longer term.

Also if you're looking for a CPU that wont bottleneck the GPU anything past a 4000+ or a pentium D will do nicely. However, C2D's are extremely cheap right now given their power. As much as I like to be a fan boy for AMD, C2D's are kicking butt.

Sorry Monsoon I think I confused the issue here when you posted A32N SLI Deluxe. I thought you meant an A8N32 SLI Deluxe which is a 939 socket board like your Premium. Can you give us the full info on your expected build?
