HI

My AMD 939 4800x2 CPU had to be replaced by AMD. They also sent me a new heatsink/fan. It has a 4 pin connector to my Asus A8n-E motherboard (MB has a 3 pin connector). It used the new instead of my older heatsink/fan with a 3 pin connector.

Not overclocked.

The temps had always been mid 30's to 40 with the old CPU and fan.

With the new CPU/fan the temps are 40's to mid 40's. The core temps are mid 40's to low 50's. Speedfan shows the core temp as high. (red). I do not remember the core temps with the old CPU, but never that high.

I am getting old, What is core temp?????

I used the AMD stock thermal and not Artic Silver 5. Do I need to use AS5.

What do I need to look for to correct this problems.

Thanks

Henry

get rid of the stock heatsink since 4 pins is usually pwm (pulse width modulation) or something close to that.

the fan is running too slow is my guess and thermal pads stink.

get a decent heatsink with a 3 pin fan and AS5. try here...

if this fits, can't go wrong with it.

stay away from zalman, their clamp designs suck lately.

You should go ahead and use AS5 with your current HSF instead of the stock stuff. Clean off the stock thermal, perferably with Artic Clean. However, if that is not immediatley availabe you can use isopropyl alcohol, and the higher the percentage the better, say 91%. Also, coffee filters are great to use as a lint free cloth.

Then follow the instructions for the AS5 here:

http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm

No need go out and spend money on a new HSF just yet. See how the AS5 does for you, then go from there.

yeah, but that HS has a 4 pin plug and he has it in the mobo's 3 pin.
he's gunna burn another 4600 screwing around, get a damn heatsink or at LEAST put a 3 pin fan on the piece of shitt stock HS. huh.gif

CoreTemp is the temperature inside the CPU below the Integrated Heat Sink (cap on top of the CPU) while CPU temp is the temp at the IHS. CoreTemp is usually higher than CPU temp.

If nothing else changed in your case and the ambient air is the same temp, then something went wrong on the install. Although your temps aren't frighteningly high, they should not have gone up 10c. I would suspect that you may have used to much thermal paste which rather than conduct heat from the IHS to your HSF (Heat Sink Fan)would insulate them from each other. Remove the HSF and clean off both surfaces with Isopropyl Alcohol and then reapply your paste of choice as per the AS5 instructions above. You need only a little dot in the middle of the IHS, heat and pressure will take care of the rest.

If you plan on overclcokingthen a really good HSF is a good investment. You can use them on subsequent builds for years and they really do mak a huge difference.

I think he just used the stock thermal pad that comes on the stock heatsink and was asking if now should he use AS5.

also that 4 pin fan in a 3 pin mobo fan plug is not going to run right.

Thanks for your replies. I will take the stock heatsink with a 4 pin connector off and replace it with the stock heatsink with a 3 pin connector using AS5.

I was not sure what the core temp meant and now I do.

Thanks
