I havent -*test*-('")ed with orthos yet. I did manage to get 9032 in 3dmark06. biggrin.gif

Crisao23- 12-14-2006
Test it with Orthos. On air, for more than 4 hours at least.

Congrats on the CPU Bei Fei....sounds like its gonna be a good one for you.

I cant wait for my 8800GTS to get here cool.gif

3D06 is a pretty good -*test*-('") of stability but you definitely need the Orthos run as Cris said.

Wanna, you ordered a 8800GTS? ohmy.gif biggrin.gif You da man!

Crazy numbers on those 8800's... im in the process of selling off some surplus stuff at the moment just to get one... question is: stick with AMD or go Intel to complement the 8800??

Merc- 12-15-2006
I don't think that at 3.0GHz your AMD dual core would hold back a single 8800 or even two, although with the performance of the 8800GTX I can't see any need ofr ALI at this time, or even a year from now unless you have a 30" LCD display.

If you're ready for a new system, however, then I'd say Core 2 Duo for sure. The two don't even compare at this time. Personally I am waiting for fall of next year to see what the new AMD quads can do, especially when mounted on a HT3 board with PCIe-2, before moving up. I think the K8L may be a big surprise.

paulzig- 12-15-2006
I just dont want to give up on AMD just yet.. forever the optimist im hoping they'll pull something decent from out of their proverbials...

Merc- 12-15-2006
I think they will, just not till summer or fall of 2007. Core 2 is an awesome chip but quads, whether we need them or not, are the future. AMD dominated the single core and dual core markets until just few months ago. They are in need of a major overhaul but I don't think they can afford to compete head to head with Intel's deep pockets.

So AMD uses their "limited" capital to hit the next big deal with something revolutionary. Why spend more money on the dual cores, a market you dominated for a year but n longer, when their shelf life is limited. Hit the quad core with everything you have and leapfog Intel on the next gen paltform.

I always think about AMDs wait on adopting DDR2. People complained but why? DDR2, until recently, sucked. DDR was mature and faster than DDR2 as well as much cheaper. When DDR2 finally caught up with DDR and the priices evened out, AMD was right there with the new socket and CPU to capitalize on it. Pretty smart IMHO.

I think that they are doing the same thing with the CPU. Spending more money on dual core would be stupid at this point. You have a fairly good chip that topped the charts for awhile and Core 2 is too strong, albeit late to the game, to overcome. In a year Core 2 will be very old news as all the talk will be quad core. Spend your resources on the quad. and forget the dual at this time. Next year promises to be an amazing year for techies

I ran orthos last night at 2880 for a little over 3.5 hours with no problems. I turned it off I was concerned because my core temps were 49c. I was able to get 9354 out of 3dmark06 after pushing my clocks on my 8800 to 620 and 840. I went from 8000 tops on my 3800 to this.

Now all I need is to get 2 320 gig hdd's and set up a raid array. I am thinking of going to water. I have 4 single 120 rads and fans, but I still need a good pump and blocks. I will skip the video card for now until I can get a reasonable priced block. I am going to head out to the aquarium shop and get a 120v pump, I was looking at an Eheim 1250. Microcenter had danger den blocks, I will get a TDX block. I was thinking about the chipset block, is this necessary? Hopefully you guys can give me some advise on the water cooling.

*UPDATE* I purchased the pump last night and ordered the CPU block. I ordered the 1/2" fittings, hopefully that is enough to get my oc to 3 or higher. biggrin.gif

I did a little more -*test*-('")ing on my Opty. I have done 4 hours on orthos @2925 325x9, HTT x 3, 133/200 for my ram. I get some "higher thank I can stand" temps after that -*test*-('") 51c. I lowered my clocks to 2790 because it makes me feel better. Temps get to around 44~45c on load. All the -*test*-('")s were done on stock voltage.

I don't know to much about adjusting voltages on my MB, I see people talking about enabling CPU overvoltage. How do I do that with my board?

I also clocked my 8800GTS up to 680/880 and got this result.

3dmark06 score

Not bad eh? biggrin.gif

Merc- 12-17-2006
Almost 10K with one card. Unbelievable. I can't get past 5500 with two 6800GTs maxed out.

The Premium doesn't have overvolt, only the 32 does. You will get over 3.0 easily I think.

Arlie- 12-17-2006
Given that my FX-60 is seems to be hitting an absolute wall at 3000, I may have to invest a few bucks in a 165 just for kicks.

Crisao23- 12-18-2006
Current ambient temperature here: 32°C +

Unless Swiftech calls me and ask me to -*test*-('") a water cooling kit under extreme load I need to stop dreaming about overclocking tongue.gif

Maybe a chiller will hold it biggrin.gif
