Leave the Dell alone and use it strictly as a gaming rig. Do all your tinkering on the P35 chipset board as they are fun to tinker with. I'd stick that QX6700 in the P35 board, along with an 8800GTX XXX, load XP up and use it as your benchmarking/stunt rig. Maybe watercool the CPU and GPU sometime down the road if you get a hankering to dig in deeper.

I can't speak for the DFI but the Asus P5K Deluxe is really a pleasure to work with. Also, if you do run into trouble you won't miss out on gaming while you get the bench rig back up and running.

I'd use a single Raptor and just load the basics. No virus or spyware stuff, no firewall, nothing that would take processor or memory time. Strip windows down as well. If it gets infected do a quick windows reinstall to a 10 GB partition and format another 20GBs for a browser and benchmark software. Just leave the rest of the drives unformatted as you won't need them. Have the other Raptor in there as a real OS load with all the stuff you need to function on the internet safely and unplug it when you bench.

I have a SATA-150 80GB in an external case that is plugged directly into the SATA ports for benching. I unplug my three "real" drives, turn on the external and reboot with Profile 2 off the external stunt disk.

Guys, Guys! I AM NOT TOUCHING THE DELL!
Where did I say in any post since i got the new dell that i was gunna fuc with it?
I keep saying IAM NOT GUNNA TOUCH IT!

I do have these parts here already (not buying anyting else as i said in other post)
i have the ultras here for like a month, not buying shite.

a mobo was the only thing i was going to get if needed.

Man i feel like i'm chatting with dell support. READ what i write SLOWly.

Just for that Merc I'm shipping the 8800 GTX in a ziplock bag. dry.gif

...wheres my meds damnit...

jmkays- 09-20-2007
All that is missing from this three way is Ricardo Montalban in a codpiece. wink.gif

CapnKirk- 09-20-2007
in your sig you have the same parts i have sitting here (that have been here for months) only difference is i have the MSI ultras.
So is that rig a nightmare or would it suffice to just play around with.

Remember, not spending a dime, I have all that and more.

In your sig

Asus P5N32-E SLI Plus| Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700|
Corsair Dominator 2GB DDR2 1142 (PC2 9136)
PC P&C 1KW
WD Raptor 150GB 10,000 RPM 16MB Cache
X-Fi Extreme

Mike, I replaced the QX6700 with the 6850 this past week, so hadn't gotten around to updating the signature yet.

Nothing wrong with the QX6700 -- it's just that for comparable dollars, the QX6850 is the better processor. That said, I did not realize you had purchased the QX6700. I knew you had the Ultras. I would sell one of those while the market is still good. Use the Dell to kill things on. smile.gif

CapnKirk- 09-20-2007
heh, actually the QX6700 was free. biggrin.gif

lot's going on here, i try my best to turn bad into good when people screw me.

dunno what i'm gunna do, don't care at this point as long as i have a nice rig to turn on and have fun. way overpriced, but i'm working on it to make some back.
wink.gif

well at least merc is getting a special card, shipped in a brown paper bag, but that's besides the point. unsure.gif

did you see the specs on these ultras, will use them in a 386 DX if i have too.

http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=pr...136&cat3_no=138

btw, you now have an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850 on the Asus P5N32-E SLI Plus, a motherboard whice i have also and arlie told me that i would be looking for trouble using a quad core on that board, and mine is slower than yours.

i have the mobo in the case, mounted the water cooler and going for it.
it's a play around with rig anyway using parts i don't have to buy.

what 3dmark 06 scores you pulling with that?

paulzig- 09-20-2007
Oh... forgot to say: Don't tinker with the dell... biggrin.gif Don't tell me Merc is getting a GTX now..

CapnKirk- 09-20-2007
now where is the thread/post where i said anything about tinkering with the replacement?

and the first one was a mess, so that's why i got inside it, plus dell told to fuc off after 21 days.

see this is why i am going threw all my pc stuff and using what i have already to build a rig just to play around with, but it seems you are the only one who doesn't speed read through a post around here today.

since arlie told me the mobo i have will have problems with a quad core, a mobo was the ONLY thing i was thinking of buying AND not all the other parts I listed.

btw merc i ran out of brown paper bags to ship the card, will have to use toilet paper and tape. K? LMFAO! tongue.gif

Yes and it's working fine for me. It also worked fine running the QX6700 -- refer to the Forum War 2007 results for the pudding. I realize Arlie had trouble with the Plus board; I commented on this earlier in the thread (looks like we have another speed reader wink.gif). I have nothing but respect for Arlie's opinion, but he's in the minority. I may drop the 6850 in the P5K box and put the 6600 in the Plus system, but for now I'm happy with the results.

I hit some respectable 3DM06 scores, but that bench is more a video card bench -*test*-('") tool than a CPU bench. I don't think it's a good yardstick to measure a CPU's performance, particularly a quad core. I have my settings and OC results posted under my blog, CK.

As do I, Arlie is A+ no doubt.
I know you mentioned Arlie's bad luck, but i already heard it from him as i said in my other post.

either he got a bad batch, or a bad run of some of the components.
asus is 50 50 hit or miss.

So it's safe to say there are not any motherboards available that run fine with a quad cpu and have SLI?
All because of the 680i chipset?
Well it's a Tinker rig for fun, lets see how stable I can make it running balls to the wall.

Hey? does newegg sell fire extinguisher's?

thanx for all your help and don't mind me, been under more stress then i can handle lately.

hey merc? guess what man. i used the last of the toilet paper and can't ship the card in it.

ermmm, i'll put it in an envelope and drop it in the mailbox.

just busting you all day bud, gunna pack that card nice, well you know how i pack stuff.
ok good people, had a bad day, sorry bout that.
well more like a bad month...

and I say this again guys.
dell is running fine and i haven't touched a thing nor will I.
the tinker rig i am going to build is with parts i have already, some from months ago.
not buying a cpu, case or nothing. i have more crap here to suffice.
a motherboard was the only thing i was thinking of buying if needed.

if anything, i'm selling stuff on ebay, not buying. smile.gif

Merc- 09-20-2007
Capn packed that brick of a PC P&C 750 Silencer like it was a dozen Bald Eagle eggs after a DDT spraying. I have full faith that my GTX will arrive safe and sound. biggrin.gif

Yep, Capn made me an offer I couldn't, but should've, refused. Plus it is an XFX which I have a soft spot for plus it isn't just a GTX it is an XFX 8800GTX XXX.

It's a sweet video card; you'll love it.

Can't wait. I never thought I'd say this but I actually need the power of that card. I have to overclock my GTS to play Bioshock at 1680/1050 and it still struggles a tiny bit. These new games are system eaters but beautiful to look at. Plus, Halflie episode 2 is coming out biggrin.gif

vegasr- 09-20-2007
Don't know if this was suggested or not, but please don't tinker with the dell.
