Ok guys I've scoured the net for a couple weeks now looking for updated info on LCD monitors, especially for gaming. Most info is dated a year or two.
Does this mean issues with stuck/dead pixels, response time, contrast have been solved or are minimal now?
I've narrowed down my search to Dell and BenQ. Dell for their warranty services and BenQ due to the positive responses on forums.
I'm thinking 19in widescreen, but 22 in widescreen are only a few dollars more.
Any monitor gurus with information?
Regards,

I believe with most higher quality monitors the response times are normally quite low, thus being a non issue with gaming and such. Dead pixel issues havn't seemed to be a issue as well.
Dell sure does make a nice monitor, their 24in has been highly rated. Its great gaming at 1920x1200 on a 24 inch LCD. I've seen them around the $500 range at time. There 22 inch is something special too.

I have two of the Benq WS monitors and have been happy with them. They do not compare in image quality to the Viewsonics I have, but at less than half the price, that's not surprising. They game well, it's just a little tough to handle a lot of text on them.
I still believe quite firmly that Viewsonic makes the best out there, but it's tough to justify their cost for a home rig.

Viewsonic as high end huh? I don't think there price is any higher than Samsung or Dell.
Arlie what do you think about this one?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16824116075Or this one ( I don't like the built in speakers)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16824116060IS the pro series the ones your referring to as high end?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16824116054Vegasr, the Dell's are just out of my price range except for the 19 in ultrasharp. Whats your take on it?

Forgot about Viewsonic. I'd go with Arlie's recommendation. Those are some very nice monitors at a good price.

Do not get a dell. Once the warranty expires the thing will crap out and your SOL as far as getting it fixed because Best buy and other electronic stores can NOT touch them. Even if the warranty is expired. Dell will charge you the cost of the monitor to do the repairs to. So unless you want to spend a ton on extended warranties or don't plan to keep it for longer than the warranty i would not reccomend a dell. If you do get something else the same truths may hold true but at least you can take it to best buy and they can fix it.
my samsung sync master is pretty nice too no dead pixels even after 2+ years and it can run a TV signal. I love PIP while playing games.

Why do you say the Dells will crap out after warranty period?
I've read too many negative reviews about Samsung to trust them right now. Plus their tech support sucks.

I've had a Dell 24" inch for 2 1/2 years. It didn't have a warranty, because I bought it on Ebay.
I'd think that Dells and Samsungs would have roughly the same reliability. Though, of course, everyone will have slightly different experiences.

about 13 days after the warranty was up the back light/backlight inverter burned out. The part is 80$ takes about an hour to replace. Should cost 100-150 Dell wants 400$. No one else can touch the dell because it's a dell. There is only one place to take it, Dell. The Samsung on the other hand can be repaired by best buy or another electronics store.
When researching what was wrong with my monitor I found that a ton of other people had the same problem. Just after the warranty was up the backlight or inverter burned out. The samsungs may do exactly the same things but you can take it somewhere and get it fixed you have options with the dell you can only take it to dell.

Sony's SDM-P234 has been a real work horse for me and held up great. I run two of them at home. They are a bit overpriced, but I believe the price has come down.
The higher end Dell monitors have been consistently well rated by Maximum PC and CPU magazines; however, I agree with Grim on this one, it's a REAL crapshoot. Dell's warranty support and service, in general, is abysmal unless you are a business client and pay for Dell Gold Support (where onsite service is offered and all tech support and service calls are processed State side). Gold Support is not an option for home users -- even if you're willing to pay for it.
Given that monitors have one of the highest failure rates of any computer peripheral, I personally insist on excellent and extended warranty coverage.

Thanks fellas, still haven't made up my mind.
Now I'm stuck choosing between LCD and Plasma (3 tv's at work)
vegasr- 01-07-2008
LCD should be a whole lot better picture than Plasma, but Plasma will be cost less.
Afterhours07083- 01-08-2008
Lg is has released a 32" plasma in Brazil, slated for release here by end of month.
LCD a better picture?

jmkays- 01-08-2008
Yes -- where the video signal source is a GPU.
Afterhours07083- 01-10-2008
Yes of course. The video signal will be vga, the tv signal will be today's standart coaxial, and then of course HD via coax in a year.
Our use it two fold. VGA signal for advertising and tv for customers to view.
I think I've ruled out Plasma based on the fact we have to go with 32" and I'd hate to purchase the very first 32" plasma to hit the market. That just sounds like trouble waiting to happen.
