I am thinking of installing my old IDE drive from my previous computer (it when kaput!), into my new PC, as I want to retrieve some personal files from it. I currently have one SATA2 HDD, that has windows running from it. Do I just install the second IDE drive to the IDE port. Do I need any drivers for it to be recognised, and will it slow down my PC to any detrimental effect?

Eventually when I have copied the files over to my main Hard disk, I will probably get another SATA HDD, as they are quite inexpensive these days, but for now I just need to retrieve some old files.

Thanks for any replies smile.gif

Should be a pretty straight forward deal.
Just connect it up, make sure it is jumpered and cabled correctly.
Boot into the bios and check your boot order. You will prolly have to set the sata back to boot drive.
For some reason when you connect an IDE hard drive the bios wants to make it first boot.
Boot into windows and it should recognize it and install the device.
You may or may not have to reboot to use it.
Other then that it shouldnt be an issue.

An alternative thought....

I'm too lazy to put an IDE in this new system. Also wanted the space free for future SATA drives. So bought an external powered USB box for IDE drives, and transferred data thru the USB port after the new unit was up and running. This also allows me the benefit of having a portable storage device handy in the office if needed for transporting material elsewhere, or extra tempory storage if needed. I have used this device several times this year.
