Some sweet socket AM2 goodness!!

etracer/22m 43.328s/ABIT KN9 SLI/X2 5600 @ 3360MHz/DDR2 5-5-5-16 2T (480MHz)/Air/04-22-07

I picked up this processor and motherboard on a whim during a combo sale at Fry's. Seems like it's a "golden" stepping. For full details, see my post in the 1M challenge thread.

Good Job! again biggrin.gif

Those are some pretty impressive numbers etracer. Well done!

Hey ... I want a "good job" too WGF for having the edge in the E6300 E4300 line. My chip hit 6000 degrees C in getting there wink.gif .

WannaGoFast- 04-23-2007
My bad!.......I must have overlooked that somehow... Good Job! biggrin.gif

You're gonna womp me with your new E6420. But, can you take me with your old E4300? biggrin.gif

WannaGoFast- 04-23-2007
That ...my friend... sounds like a challenge. I like challenges.
I dunno though.....that score was pushing the 4300 to its limits.

Not sure I can top it.

The 6420 does score pretty well, but its such a crappy overclocker.
It wont be staying in this machine long, so I wont post a score with it.
But even with its limited OC potential I was able to get mid 14s easy.
4mb L2 Cache vrs 2mb L2 Cache does make a big difference. (In SuperPi at least)

But I may just have to revisit the the 4300
now that I have a backup CPU if I kill it wink.gif

He he ... sounds like fun, WGF. A sort of forum wars 07 warmup.

I figure I've got enough headroom in the E6300 to knock maybe 3 - 5 seconds from my pi 32M 16m 09s. And my car goes zero to sixty in under 6.5 seconds too ... NOT.

Wouldn't have guessed the E6420s aren't good overclockers. The extra 2M of cache should have helped. Think they've disabled them somehow?

WannaGoFast- 04-23-2007
In my opinion......worthless as it may be.....

I think Intel has just gotten better at binning them for speed ratings.
I believe they are using the better cores on their new quad cores.
On Quad it would be very important to have 2 good cores that can
run their rated speed while maintaining as low a temp as possible.

I was hoping they would be using some better cores on the early release
6420's so as to inpire some more interest from their enthusiast market.

Apparently I was dead wrong on that guess sad.gif

This one needs 1.55v to run stable at 3GHz even with TEC assisted cooling.
Anything above 3.2GHz is impossible to get orthos stable with any voltage.

Was hoping to find at least a 3.6GHz capable 4mb L2 cache CPU for forum wars.

So the hunt for a "good" CPU for me shall be continued. wink.gif

More cache = less overclock (usually).

Cache adds an enormous number of transistors to the core. With all the extra gates you much more likely to have a few "weak" ones. Heck, most lesser cache chips are the same silicon as the cores with more cache. They simply have part of the cache disabled because it had defects.

Really? It makes sense that with more cache there are *potentially* more problems, but if the cache -*test*-('")s out sound that shouldn't be the case. More cache should equal more computing speed and equal capability to overclock.

Merc- 04-23-2007
More cache equals more transistors which means more voltage and heat. AMD CPUs don't need as much cache because they access the RAM so much faster and more efficiently (at least that is my theory) but these Core 2s really get a boost from yhe extra cache.

The 6420 overclocking so poorly is disappointing. i guess that route is gone and I think you're right Wanna, Intel is binning better now. I am wondering if the new 6600s (at $234 now) are just as poor. Wanna's experience has me nervous so maybe I shold pull the trigger now and get an older chip (if that is possible) before the new "better binned" chips arrive.

LOL. My ZBoard is not switching any longer when i trade out keyboards. I have to reboot sometimes. rolleyes.gif Get a new model or learn how to type I guess.

Merc- 04-23-2007
Pulled the trigger. Wanna got me scared so the e6600 is on its way. rolleyes.gif BTW, you get a copy of Supreme Commander with it for free, as well as free shipping. biggrin.gif Makes me feel better.
